The appearance of wrinkles and facial folds can be smoothed by adding structure and volume underneath and bringing sunken skin back up to the surface. Fillers can be added to hands and ear lobes as well for a more youthful appearance. Generally, this is done by injecting materials called fillers into the skin, to achieve a temporary effect. The fillers described below have been proven to be safe to use.

Restylane™ / Restylane Lyft™
Restylane™ (hyaluronic acid), and its thicker counterpart Restylane Lyft™, are sterile stabilized gels derived from bacterial fermentation. It is indicated for the correction of facial lines, augmentation of lips and “sculpting” of facial contours.
The FDA has approved Restylane for facial tissue augmentation. No skin testing is required, and the material can last for about 6-12 months depending on the area treated, the type of skin and injection technique.

How does Restylane Silk work?
Just like the other members of the Restylane family, Restylane Silk is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, a sugar that is naturally present in your skin.
What makes Restylane Silk different from other products?
Like other areas of the face, the lips and skin around the mouth show signs of aging as an individual gets older. This often results in lip thinning, lost shape and an increase in vertical lines above the lip. Restylane Silk is designed specifically to provide natural-looking results in these areas. That’s why it’s made of smaller, smoother particles than those used in other Restylane products.

JUVÉDERM™ Ultra Injectable Gel / JUVÉDERM™ Ultra Plus/ JUVÉDERM™ Voluma XC
JUVÉDERM™, JUVÉDERM™ Ultra Plus & JUVÉDERM™ Voluma XC Injectable Gel are colorless hyaluronic acid gels that are injected into facial tissue to smooth wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent. JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel temporarily adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the face.
JUVÉDERM™, JUVÉDERM™Ultra Plus & JUVÉDERM™ Voluma XC Injectable Gel will help smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last about 6 to 12 months.

How long should I expect my results to last?
Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results should last about 6 months and up to 2 years (number of syringes necessary will vary per patient). Collagen induction stimulation (CIS) leads to some permanent improvement of wrinkles and depressions.
Radiesse™
Radiesse™ is a new injectable product for lip enlargement and filling of folds and lines. The advantage of this product is the potential for a long lasting effect. Radiesse™ consists of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in gel (carboxymethylcellulose). Because calcium hydroxylapatite is a normal constituent of bone, it should not elicit a chronic inflammatory or immune response. Additionally, the gel carrier does not require allergy testing such as required with collagen.
Calcium hydroxylapatite has been used in humans for a long time in prosthetic implants in dental, facial, and orthopedic surgery. Animal studies and use of the injectable product in vocal cords and bladder neck areas have shown that the product remains soft without new bone formation when injected into soft tissue. The longest term studies come from Italy and suggest that Radiesse™ shows promise as a new agent for facial contouring with no serious side effects and reasonable efficacy and durability. Radiesse™ injection is completely compatible with other procedures. The effects of the procedure can last 1 to 2 years.
