Remove unsightly veins from your legs

Laser vein therapy, along with Sclerotherapy, is a popular method for eliminating varicose veins and superficial telangiectasias (spider veins) in which a solution, called a “sclerosing agent,” is injected into the veins to be treated. Dr. Ablon prefers a combination treatment of both the laser and sclerotherapy to achieve optimum results.

Procedure Options

Laser Vein Therapy: Today’s new medical lasers provide safe and effective non-surgical treatment options for the removal of spider and varicose veins. Our new, advanced laser treatments allow us to deliver a precise dosage of energy to each vein. During your treatment, light energy is delivered through a special laser hand piece to the targeted vein, in a series of brief pulses. The light energy is absorbed by the blood vessel and then the blood vessel is subsequently absorbed by the body.

Injection Sclerotherapy: This procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the vein through a micro-needle.  The tiny needle generally causes very little pain.  The sclerosing solution causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually disappears.  A typical treatment may last for 15 to 30 minutes and consist of multiple injections.  Injection sclerotherapy may eliminate the need for an invasive surgical procedure.

Combination Treatment: The laser vein treatment is usually combined with injection sclerotherapy to produce the best results for most people.

Does Sclerotherapy work for everyone?

The majority of people who have sclerotherapy performed will be cleared or at least see good improvement. Unfortunately, however, there is no guarantee that sclerotherapy will be effective in every case. Approximately 10% of patients who undergo sclerotherapy have poor to fair results (poor results means that the treated veins have totally disappeared after 6 treatments). In very rare instances the patient’s condition may become worse after sclerotherapy treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments needed to clear or improve the condition differs from patient-to-patient, depending on the extent of varicose and spider veins present. One to six (1 to 6) or more treatments may be needed; average is 3 to 4.

What are the most common side effects?

The most common side effects experienced with both laser vein therapy and injection sclerotherapy include transient hyperpigmentation and phlebitis.
